What up yall. I asked a few of the hosts of WEAA’s Strictly Hip-Hop a few questions. I started with the 1st host I listened to when I found out about the show. Kil was the host when I started listening in ’95. Tanya B took over shortly thereafter who, as it turns out, he’s married to. He’s responsible for a lot of the segments I loved about Strictly. I asked brother Kil a few questions and he was gracious enough to oblige. Here’s the interview:
YOIW: Who are you in relationship to Strictly Hip-Hop?
Kil: I started interning with Strictly Hip Hop in ’93 under Vinny V. 6 months into my intern, Vin decided he was stepping down and he was giving the show to me. Me and my homegirl Chris aka The Golden Child hosted it for a good 6 months, then she kinda fell back and I went on to host from ’94 to ’97, when Tanya B took it over. I moved out to Atlanta for a year and came back in ’98 and hosted again with my homegirl Sam til 2000. During those early years I brought Demo Madness, (which was the 1st time 88.9 had a set time to help promote local and unsigned artist), Hit Em In the Head (2am every Friday we’d premier all of the newest music you couldn’t hear anywhere else) and the Question of the Week which gave local cats an opportunity to call in and get on the air and chop it up with us. My whole goal for the station was to make it more accessible to the Morgan and Baltimore crowds.
YOIW: What’s your favorite Strictly moment?
Kil: The first time I hosted Strictly dolo. When I knew that this was MY show. That outside of burning the building down, that I could do, play and say damn near anything I wanted to.
YOIW: What are you up to now?
Kil: I got my hands in a little bit of everything. Still making beats and producing for artists such as K Fanat, Vegas, Driz Lo, Viral Audio and StressWon to name a few. I’m currently finishing up writing 2 screen plays and shooting a webseries in B’more that I’m writing, producing and directing with my man D and I’m also a relationship coach with my homegirl Dr. Roz. So in a nutshell, I’m a producer who can produce & mix your album, do your photo shoot, design your album cover, direct your videos and write a screenplay all while giving you the best relationship advice you ever got.
