J-Dilla-11What up y’all. I’m going with a bit of real black history today. Today would have been James Dewitt Yancey’s 39th birthday. You may know him better, as J. Dilla, Dilla Dawg, Jay Dee, or Ma Duke’s baby boy. He also passed in the same week of his 32nd birthday, causing this week to be known as Dilla Week. In my very humble opinion (that happened to be right) Dilla is the 3rd or 4th best producer of all time. His sound is very responsible for the brand of Hip-Hop that I prefer. He’s also a large part of the foundation of the Neo-Soul movement of the late 90s/early 2000s, as he did joints for D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, and Dwele. His style is a little bit Primo, a little bit Pete Rock, and some new ish he came up with on his own. The boy was bad, is basically what I’m trying to say. It is in the spirit of this badness present my Top Ten (in no specific order) Favorite Dilla Joints (The Abridged Version):
1. Fuck the Police – Jay Dee (single)*
2. Little Brother – Black Star (The Hurricane: Music from and Inspired by the Motion Picture)
3. Didn’t Cha Know – Erykah Badu (Mama’s Gun)
4. Dooinit – Common (Like Water for Chocolate)
5. Dynamite! – The Roots (Things Fall Apart)
6. Let’s Ride – Q-Tip (Amplified)
7. Find A Way – A Tribe Called Quest (The Love Moment)
8. 1nce Again – A Tribe Called Quest (Beats, Rhymes and Life)
9. Runnin’ – The Pharcyde (Labcabincalifornia)
10. Stakes is High – De La Soul (Stakes is High)*
There you have it, a lot of joints are missing there but these are some of my favorites. Do yourself a favor, if you don’t know about Dilla, Google him, look him up on Wikipedia. Get familiar, you wont be sorry you did. So when you get a chance, bang some Dilla in the whip today, I know I did, and if you’re not down with Dilla…Your Opinion is Wrong. Peace
*My favorite Dilla joints.
